Me doing Man on the moon

Monday, March 30th, 2009

This was the start of better quality sound on my videos. The music was now being played through the headphones, and not the speakers I was now using the Stereo mix channel on the soundcard. Now everything was not going through the mic. This allowed me to put a reverb effect on the vocal without doing the same to the music.

Which left me with one other major problem. The video and audio synchronisation. The vocals were not matching the video, which made it seem like I was miming. That is my voice singing the song though.

Now the song. This was my second REM song. Another good one by the band. This one is called “Man on the moon”.

My rendition is below.

One commenter was completely sure that it wasnt me doing the song. I think that had something to do with the sync problems, but complimentary in a way, condsidering they thought it was a proper recording :)

Hands touching hands

This was the final video where my sound setup was of a poor quality. So this one is quiet, like the others.

My second Neil Diamond song on Youtube. The song is Sweet Caroline.

This is another one of his most well known songs.

and this is my rendition:

The sound gets much better after this one, but another problem shows it’s head. I’ll explain that in the next post.

Video 11. A good year for the roses.

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

So on to my second Elvis Costello song, which wasn’t originally by him. I can’t quite remember who did the original version. Elvis Costello’s version was the first one I heard. I only found out recently, that it wasn’t originally by him!

The tune I’m talking about is “A good year for the roses”. This is one of those songs that I have sung many times, and is one of a few country songs that I sing.

See what you think:

There’s one Neil Diamond song after this, and then the sound quality starts to improve. Though my technical problems were not completely solved. There was another big issue to remedy, that I will explain later.

Moving on. I hope you like my take on this old classic.

Singing Travis

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Now to another band I admire for releasing a string of good songs. They are “Travis”.

“Sing” was the song that I did as my 10th Youtube vid.

It was a top ten hit in the UK for Travis in the summer of 2001. The fourth of 4 top 10 hits in a row.

One of the things that turned me on to Travis was the guitar sounds they used. Quite tinny in places, but they managed to balance it quite well with the bass.

On to my rendition. Check out my version of “Sing” below:

I have done one other Travis song on Youtube, so far, and plan to do a few more in time. That’s likely to be well into the future.

I’m sure I’ve got loads of others to go between :)

And now for The Verve.

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

I wanted to sing the songs of many bands and artists on Youtube, and choosing the next one to do was quite difficult considering the wide choices I had, but I chose a song from one of my favourite bands in the end. Mainly for one Album. The band was “The verve” and the song was “The drugs dont work”.

I heard that Richard Aschroft wrote this song about his mother’s battle with cancer. Which adds other dimensions to the song as far as emotional content is concerned.

I only really found out the meaning of this song a few years ago, but it’s one I’ve always liked singing. I always assumed it was about love, and not drugs.

So on to my version of this great song. You can see how I handled this song below:

There were other songs by the verve that I enjoyed singing. Much the same as several other bands I like really. With that in mind, it’s not really a shock to discover that I did more that one of their songs :)

Video 8. Babylon

Friday, March 6th, 2009

My next attempt was at a David Gray song. Bablyon was a number 5 hit in the UK for David in 2000. One of several good songs by him. This is one of his songs that I have sung on karaoke on numerous occasions, so the video was a breeze to make. All I had to do was just play the backing and sing. I didn’t need to practice it. I knew it quite well already.

Check out the results of my effort below.

So I was laready up to eight videos, and my viewing figures and subscibers were steadily climbing.

So the next task was quite simple really. More videos. lol. :)

Video number 7. The Scientist.

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Video number 7 of mine on Youtube was my second Coldplay song. A song called ‘The scientist’. One of several Coldplay songs I really liked. Off the CD ‘A rush of blood to the head’.

It was probably in my top 5 songs on that particular album. Though I regard the best song on that album as being a song called ‘Warning sign’. I want to do an acoustic version of that song soon. I couldn’t find the backing music for it :)

Actually, that’s not strictly true. I found a company that had the backing for it in it’s catalogue, and I ordered it, but I didn’t hear from them again, and ended up empty handed.

Back to the subject of the post. The second of my Coldplay songs on Youtube. The Scientist. See what you think.

I can think of several other Coldplay songs I’d like to have a go at. Too much choice can be a problem in itself. I do like to take my time learning the Coldplay songs. I pay special attention to the expression, because there’s a lot going on vocally, in most Coldplay songs, and the expression needs to be right for it to sound right.
