An Original - Take me home.

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

The week this one was put up on Youtube was quite a poignant one. It was a couple of weeks after the passing of my grandmother, The funeral was on the tuesday before the upload. I loved her dearly, but I cannot deny that she had a long life. She was 93.

In the early part of last year, I was taking part in music collaborations. One of these was with a Swedish man called Ulf. He is extremely talented, and had retired from gigging. He is now focussing on the writing side, and is currently providing music for film and television. I would say that the main area of his music is electronic. There was a song I completed with him, which was his music, and my words. This isn’t that song though. I only mention it because he wanted to have a go at doing the music for this song. We never got around to doing it, so this one is all me. The name of the song is “Take me home”.

It’s about someone who has made a big mistake in a relationship, that caused it to break. In the song, the person is appealing to their partner.

Check out the song here.

A challenge from last year

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Now for something a little different. Last year, a friend of mine challenged me to take a Beatles song and write a different version of it. The only provision was that I could not select any of their songs that had been hit singles. The song I was to choose, had to come from one of their albums. I listened to all of their albums, and picked 10 possible songs out of all of them. Then I narrowed it down to a single song.

I normally find my own songs pretty easy to write, but this was more difficult that I first thought. With my own songs I can hear the full arrangement in my head, and all I have to do is to bring that into reality. In the case of this song though, it already had music to it, and I had to try and forget the original music, so that I could come up with my own. It wasn’t a quick process, but I eventually came up with something in the end.

Check out my new version:

My version of All I’ve got to do by The Beatles

My next post is an Original song by me. A composition from 2007.

I’m going to finish off with the Youtube stats.

There are now 526 Subscribers. Up a couple.

The viewings of my channel are 11,071.

The overall video views have topped 150k, and are now 150,542.

Almost up to a nice round 60 videos. This one is the 59th that I put up on youtube. This is one of those songs that is quite memorable. The reason for that is that it’s quite a different song. The song is “Mmm mmm mmm mmm” by a band called “Crash test dummies”. Any of you that know the song, will know that the vocals in it are pretty low. So it was a chance for me to reach to the depths of my voice and give it a good go.

Here are the results:

Me singing Mmm mmm mmm mmm by The crash test dummies

You might notice that I make a reference to a guy called Tay Zonday at the beginning. Anybody that has done the Youtube rounds will have probably heard of him. He rocketed to fame because of an original song of his on Youtube, called “Chocolate rain”. The song is nothing special, but his voice is something you cannot forget. You really don’t expect that sort of voice to come out of that body. He appears very much like a student, but when he starts to sing. This low thunderous sound comes out. Very low :)

Here we go with the current state of play on Youtube.

I now have 522 Subscribers. A slight increase on last time.

The channel viewings are slightly up at 11,048.

Finally, the total video viewings are 148,768.

I’m almost on top of the videos now. A week or two and I’ll be in line. Then I can start posting them as I put them up. The next of my videos was a challenge set by a friend last year. I’ve had such a backlog of requests, that I only got around to doing it recently. It’s to do with “The Beatles”

Me doing a Toploader song

Back to another cover. This tune reached 19 in the UK charts in 2001. In my opinion, it should have got higher, because I think it is an awesome song. It’s quite surprising to me that not many people actually know the song.

It was done by a group called “Toploader”. Everybody seems to know “Dancing in the moonlight”, which was their most successful song, as far as I know. I didn’t do that one though. I did “Only for a while”, and It’s my favourite out of all of their songs.

This is my take on it:

As my contact list grows. So does the hit of views I get in the first few days of putting a vid up. This is because it enables me to notify all those people when I upload something. Once I’ve uploaded my video, I share it with all my contacts. This also means that they can share their videos with me. There’s been some issues though, and I’ve had to start removing some names. The ones that send you up to 10 messages for one video. Perhaps they think I didn’t see it the first time, and that I might if they send it ten times!! Also there are some that send me that same videos every day. I think I’m getting about 80+ sent to me every day at the moment. So I’m starting to trim down. I can’t possibly watch all those.

Back to the latest figures.

520 Subs.

11,036 Channel viewings.

147,599 total viewings.

Next I go deep. Very deep :)

When I grow - by Jeffstunes

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

This is another of my originals. I first put this song up for Valentines day, as it is a love song. Everybody else seemed to be putting something up for that day, so I decided to put up one of my own songs.

The title of this song is “When I grow”. It’s a song of dedication.

This is it :)

Original song - When I grow

A few months ago, I altered my channel description. Inviting people to cover my songs, or use my music in their videos. This seemed like a good idea, because if people did do those things, it would help spread my music around. I’m bringing that subject up in this particular post, because someone did a cover version of “When I grow”. If you go to my channel on Youtube, you will see a playlist which is called “Covers and uses of my songs”. You will find that cover version in that playlist, and also 4 other videos, where someone has used my music.

As usual. Here is the rundown on the Youtube numbers.

I now have 516 Subscribers. So well clear of the 500 now.

The channel viewings have passed the 11k mark and now stand at 11,009.

The overall video views are at 146,277. Only another 104k to make it to a quarter of a million :) That will take a few months I think :) Though it could make it before that. None of my videos have been featured by Youtube. Along with many other Youtube members. If, by chance that should happen in the short term. The figures will go beserk.

From an Original to a cover. A lesser known song by a fantastic band.

My next song was another cover version. Last year, I was asked by several people, if I could do a number by “The fray”. I only got around to doing it recently, because of the backlog of request that I have. The song I eventually selected is called “How to save a life”. Those of you that watch Gray’s anatomy, will probably know this song.

This was one of the videos that a Hater decided to see whether they could upset me. That was a bad mistake for them :)

This inspired me to put together another video about the experience on my other Youtube channel. A lighter look at it. Some people on Youtube block haters immediately, but I decided to engage in conversation, and what happened in the end, was rather surprising, and pleasing. They actually blocked me!!!

If you go to this video on Youtube, and take a look at all comments, you’ll get an idea of the conversation that was had. They started commenting on another video, and it all wound up on this one.

Anyway. On to the song. This is my version of “How to save a life” by “The fray”.

And so we come to the Youtube Statistics again.

I’ve now got 509 Subscribers.

The channel views are 10,986. Only 14 to go until I hit 11,000.

144,696 total viewings of all my videos.

Next is another song written by me :)

You are - One of my songs

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

This song was recorded before all the other originals I’ve put up on Youtube. It was recorded about 4 years ago. It was recorded in a studio in West Worthing.

Here’s the story behind it.

I am not really a fan of entering competitions, but my local pub ran a karaoke comp, and all my friends kept on urging me to go in for it. I refused at first, but they wore me down, and I entered. The competition comprised of several qualifying rounds, and a final. In the end, I won the competition.

The first prize was a day in a recording studio, to record one song. The man who owned the studio approached me and asked me what song I wanted to record, so that he could get the backing music. That got my grey cells lighting up. I asked him if it was alright if I recorded one of my own songs. He was very happy about that, and even seemed excited.

I ended up spending a few weeks in the studio. Paying for the extra time myself. I ended up recording nine of my own songs. Being ever self critical, I was not best pleased with my vocals in the mix. I never am though. They were a bit pitchy :)

Anyway. All the instrumentation is performed by the studio owner (his strength is the bass guitar). This is one of those nine songs, and it’s called “You are”.

A few people mentioned to me about how strange they thought the song ended. I wanted to make sure I left the end hanging, to signify that the story is only part way through.

Here it is. “You are”

A Jeffstunes Original - You are

Now for a statistical update.

The subscribers are so close to the 500 mark now. They are currently 499.

The channel views are also approaching 11k, and currently stand at 10,913.

My overall video views are now 140,131.

The next post covers an awesome REM song. One of my favourites :)

Now a Billy Joel number.

I’ve sung many Billy Joel tunes, and this is one of my favourites by him. It just feels good to sing. The song is “Honesty”.

Also, I throw in some more random and useless information about one of my rare vinyl discs :)

Great words and great music. This is my version of it.

Me singing Honesty by Billy Joel

The movement of my total video viewings were impressing me in their consistency. So I thought I’d look into where those views were being counted. Some of my videos were getting more views than others, but the surprising thing was that all videos were being viewed regularly. So all videos were contributing to the regular increase.

These are the current figures.

There are 452 Channel Subscriptions.

The channel views have increased to 10,768. It’s going to be a while before this pops 11k. Unless there’s a sudden flurry of activity.

Total video views are now 130,056.

Another cover next. This is one of those songs, where I heard the cover version, before the original. Then went out and bought the original. Then made my own cover :)

Everywhere around the word

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Sometime last year, one of my friends asked me to do “America” by “Neil Diamond”. It took a while to work through the other tunes in my request list, but I finally made it :)

It didn’t matter to him that it took so long. He was overjoyed.

No beating about the bush.

This is my version:

Me singing America by Neil Diamond

Not so long ago, I made instrumental versions of my own songs available online. For those that were interested in covering me, or using my music in their videos. There have already been 4 uses, and more telling me that they will be using them. One Youtuber used my instrumental music in 3 of her videos, and a South African couple did an acoustic cover of one of my romantic songs. That’s a good start. Quicker than I anticipated :)

Youtube Stats.

I have 438 Subscribers. It went up initially. Then one of my subscribers left. Then I got another one this morning.

The channel views are up to 10,702.

I now have 125,856 total video views. They are still going along at an impressive rate

Hmmm. What’s next.

Another request from a while back. It’s one from Mr Robbie Williams :)

Video 43. All of the time

Friday, July 10th, 2009

This is the third out of 3 on the trot. This one it titled “All of the time”. It’s another slow number.

I have to say that virtually all of my Original songs have been pretty well received on Youtube. I’ve had loads of positive comments.

Take a look at “All of the time”.

Original song by Jeffstunes - All of the time

A few people on Youtube said that they wouldn’t mind doing a cover version of one of my songs, and that made me think. I thought it would be a good idea to encourage people to do that. It would have the effect of spreading my music to a wider audience.

There is an issue for a lot of singers though. Most of them cannot make the music themselves.

So I created a web page and made instrumental versions of my Original songs, and then put them up there for people to download. Then gave the link to that page in my video descriptions.

This is the link:

Jeffstunes Download page

So now people can now cover my songs if they wish, without having to compose the music. Unless they want to of course.

The one thing I do ask though is that I am credited in some way. A link to my Youtube channel would be ideal.

Now to a Youtube Statisitics update.

Before I start, there’s something I’ve noticed about the numbers. There seems to be an inconsistency in the way the numbers move. Sometimes they go fast, and at other times they go slow. The total video views are pretty consistent, but the Subscriptions seem to be erratic. Just something I noticed.

I now have 413 Subscribers.

My Channel views are 10,566.

Total video views are at 118,438.

It’s back to cover versions after this for a while. I actually pick up my guitar!!
